they're back. in two weeks, father and son have travelled across three continents, driven 2,000 miles and visited 16 colleges.
in the last two weeks, first-born has told one admissions counsellor that the way he saw it, he would not be the super-chef dishing up global delicacies, he would be the one hiring the man; charmed a hostile admissions counsellor into giving him the new, and so far undisclosed maths syllabus, so he could brush up on it, increasing his chances of admission, and got a third counsellor to promise him a 20% scholarship right from year 1, if he finished with a fairly decent high school grade.
the son's now given up the idea of culinary school; he thinks management is a better option.
his father's now given up the idea of technical school; he thinks the college with a 3:1 girls:boys ratio is the better option.
all in all, a good trip.
as for me, i'm not turning on the waterworks. not yet.
